Rules For Home Organization – 3 Simple Steps For Organizing you Home

Home Organizing Tips For Beginners

Looking for simple steps to organizing your home and where to start? Check these rules to home organization and getting rid of clutter everyone should live by.

Do you like rules? Well, let’s be honest… nobody does!

But there are some rules that you might want to follow if you are serious about home organization and keeping it that way.

I live by these rules when organizing my home. The go over some principles I live by and they help me keep my house the way I want.

I am sharing them with you today in the hopes that you too find them life-changing. They will definitely help you if you don’t know where to start when getting organized.

You’ll see how much easier organization will be by taking the following these simple steps.

Home Organizing Commandments

There are simple rules to home organization that I think everyone should adhere to in order to eliminate the clutter that keeps piling up around your house.

Check these simple Home Organizing Rules:

Rule #1: Touch it Once!

simle rule for home organization, touch it only once

Have you ever heard about this rule? It is one of the most important decluttering and organizing tip!

Procrastination happens when things start piling up and when the mess is too big to handle you tell yourself excuses to not go through it.

You tell yourself that you don’t have time or that you will do it tomorrow, but we know these excuses are partially laziness or tiredness.

This rule will save you so much time and it is seriously life changing!

For everything you put off until later, you’re touching it twice when it should be just once. You (or someone you live with) is procrastinating and putting things off until later.

Why? To save a couple of seconds today, you are wasting five minutes tomorrow, or a day in a month’s time because the stuff will pile up and the job will only get bigger!

So when you come home and throw the shirt on the bed because you’re going to hang it up or throw it in the laundry basket later you are just creating more mess.

The kids will see it and copy the example, or someone else might not take organizing seriously because after all it was already disorganized.

This is a vicious cycle but you can break it by practicing this simple rule of home organizing.

Only touch it once. It goes for everything; the laundry, the dishes, office supplies, crafts, clothes, wallet and keys….

Rule #2 – Only organize one space at a time

Organize one space at a time

Perhaps this is the best piece of advice I can give for beginners.

Don’t spread yourself small, go room by room and then category by category. You can find a list of categories for home organization here.

Work on one small area at a time is more efficient. This means you don’t have to do everything in one day and get overwhelmed about it.

You can set small increments and try and do the organization throughout a few days. It might only be for fifteen or twenty minutes per day but every little bit ads up!

The key is to get something organized everyday and make it consistent – remember rule number 1!

If you try and tackle too much at once, you won’t get done because of an already hectic schedule you probably have.

Not finishing a job feels discouraging and you might end up just giving up. The smaller the task, the easier to complete and the better you will feel!

Rule #3: Keep things together that are from the same category

Keep objects from same category together

These is very much aligned with the Konmari method’s home organization categories.

Should be simple enough to follow: sweaters with sweaters, pants with pants, towels with towels and so on.

It goes for all areas of the house, in the pantry for instance it would mean keeping all cans together in one corner or shelf.

Keeping things together is for me one of the most important things to do to organize and keep it that way.

That is what is going to make sure you can find your items easily and avoid you making a big mess looking for stuff all over the place.

Wouldn’t it be nice to find whatever it is you’re looking for in a matter of seconds?

Pretty much anywhere which is half organized will follow this rule. Take a look around any store. They’re designed to help you (the buyer) find exactly what you need – anything to easy your buying experience!

Same goes for a grocery store. If these shelves were not organized you wouldn’t be able to find what you want and therefore you would not buy it.

So follow this rule of organization for everything in your life.

I seriously follow these rules and that has helped me keep my house in a manageable state of organization.

Look at these principles today and check what you can do right now that will help you tomorrow and beyond. Often organizing something as small as a junk drawer or even your wallet can give you the boost in motivation to “step it up” into a bigger project!

And remember, getting it done is the key. Take one small step at a time, you got this!
